7 Easy Ways to Help Families Facing Homelessness
Keep that feeling of gratitude going! Bridges to Independence needs YOU to help make the season bright for families experiencing homelessness.
The holidays can be a difficult time for families experiencing homeless. You can help brighten their day by sending a little joy and letting our participants know you care. Handmade or store bought cards are welcome. Cards can be mailed to: Bridges to Independence, Attn: Cards That Care, 3103 9th Road, North, Arlington, VA 22201. Get your business, congregation, or group involved by setting up a card writing station!
Sullivan House, Bridges’ emergency shelter, is Arlington County’s largest family shelter – serving more than 40 families (100+ people) a year. Help our guests feel welcome by putting together a Welcome Kit with items they’ll need as they enter the shelter. Click here to download a shopping list.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the cost of feeding a family of four can run $149-$295 a week. Help a Bridges’ family by providing a week’s worth of groceries. Click here to download a shopping list.
The holiday season is full of parties: neighborhood cookie exchanges, office gatherings, Secret Santa exchanges, tacky sweater soirees. Throw a “party with a purpose” and ask your guests to bring a monetary gift or item donation for Bridges and the residents of our emergency shelter. After the party, items may be dropped off at your convenience to the address below. Items may also be purchased via our Amazon Wish List.
We’ve found that transportation is a major barrier to our participants obtaining and keeping gainful employment. You can help provide transportation assistance to a Bridges’ participant by donating a gas or SmartTrip card. Your donation will help a family move forward into self sufficiency. Cards may be dropped off or mailed to the address below.
Through our annual Holiday Helpers program, members of the community have the opportunity to sponsor a family or individual overcoming homelessness this holiday season. We ask that you provide them with a gift card to an area store such as Target, Walmart, Macy’s, Kohls, etc. We suggest that you spend $50-75 per person (but any denomination is warmly welcomed). We know people like to shop for gifts (especially for children) but we’ve found that gift cards help empower our parents. A gift card is a “hand up” not a “hand out.” A holiday card or note of encouragement is also welcome! Donations may be dropped off or mailed to: Bridges to Independence, Attn: Holiday Helpers, 3103 9th Road, North, Arlington, VA 22201.
